How to Prepare Your Child for the First Day of School

The first day of school, all jitters, innocent cries and happy giggles.

Starting school is a significant milestone in a child’s life, filled with excitement and a touch of anxiety. As parents, we want to ensure our children feel confident and ready for this new adventure. After growing up, we understand the importance of this transition and hence will talk about some tips, some props to accompany it, and some affirmative mantras.

Tips for preparing your child for THE FIRST DAY

Open Up Conversations

Communication is key when it comes to easing your child’s fears and anxieties about starting school. Begin by having open conversations about what to expect. Share stories from your own school days, emphasising the positive aspects.
For example: Tell a funny story of the first day of your school and how that day has been a learning and a forever memory.

Visit the School Together

Let the contemplation and excitement start even before the first day, visit the campus and important parts of the school to familiarise your child with the place, create a story with your child while walking around the campus and teach some symbols to memorise the directions and places.

Establish a Routine

Establish a fun routine like a week or 2 before the actual D-Day, from waking up to getting ready and leaving the house for school. Now this will be like a practice session to get rid of the nervousness and jitters. Make it fun by actually having the lunch box filled and treating your child when they complete the routine.

Role Play School Scenarios

You and your child can start practising the scenarios of the school by roleplaying. You can be the teacher teaching, showing the importance of education and your child being a student and responding as they should.

Read Books About School

Reading has always been a fun part for children, so read books to them about schools, being a student, school life and the learnings. This will excite them even more and they will be all prepped for THE FIRST DAY.
